Hilton Grand Vacations helps to tackle water poverty

Date

EUROC is pleased to provide an update on the charity activities of one of our members. Twenty-six (26) Hilton Grand Vacations Resorts across Europe and the UK and the We Are Water Foundation are joining forces once again. This will be the second edition of their “Walkathons for Water” initiative. This series of twenty-one charity walks, which will be staged in various European cities between July and December 2024, aims to raise funds to bring clean water and sanitation to remote communities in India and Tanzania.

Walks across Europe

The walks, which vary in location from Spain and the UK to France, Italy, Portugal, and Austria, highlight the global water crisis. The facts are that more than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water, and over 1,000 children die every day from diseases caused by this lack of access.

6 kilometres for water

Each Walkathon covers a symbolic distance of 6 kilometres, representing the average distance many children in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are forced to walk each day as they collect water from their nearest supply.

Walkers get to know how it feels

People living in most of the western world can take a few strides to a water supply and turn on the tap to access instant clean water. Not everyone in the world so fortunate. By walking this 6k distance, participants get to experience a small part of the daily struggle faced by those without access to clean water near their homes.

The initiative seeks to reduce these distances and provide children with the opportunity for a more dignified life.

This year, the focus is on two specific aid projects:

India: Construction of domestic toilets in 50 households in the indigenous Irular community in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu.

Tanzania: Providing sustainable access to safe water for the village of Kwedizinga in the Tanga region. These projects aim to benefit over 5,600 people, improving their health and well-being through better sanitation and access to clean water.

A call for solidarity and action

The Walkathons for Water are more than just charity walks; they are an invitation to take a stand against the global water crisis. By participating, individuals who choose to support the challenge serve to raise awareness of this pressing issue and contribute to solutions that can change lives.

The goal is to raise as much funding as possible to support water accessibility projects worldwide and combat the mortality and morbidity caused by water scarcity. Every kilometre walked by participants symbolises a kilometre that someone else won’t have to walk in search of water.
